A healthcare power of attorney allows the person making the document, called the principal, to designate an attorney-in-fact to make healthcare decisions when the principal becomes too sick to do so. This is used when the principal wants to limit the power of the attorney-in-fact to only medical decisions.
A healthcare power of attorney assigns the attorney-in-fact as the healthcare “agent” for the principal. The healthcare agent is responsible for making decisions regarding all aspects of the principal’s medical care.
